Fairview is an old cemetery. It sits on one of the highest spots in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and has a magnificent view of the surrounding countryside, which also includes the downtown Omaha skyline.

You can’t see it from this point, but the Missouri River is there between the two cities; it divides Nebraska and Iowa. Although they are in different states, for all intents and purposes the Omaha/Council Bluffs area is one city.

Council Bluffs, however, has taken a great deal more care to preserve its downtown area, and today it has re-energized this part of town by renovating existing buildings and created a thriving and unique small business environment. Fairview is a jewel in that new environment, and the city takes good care of it. Omaha could have learned a lot from Council Bluffs, but they destroyed the heart of our downtown long ago and there is no way to bring it back.

This is just about the highest point in the cemetery. The road in the picture is fairly level, but the cemetery itself spreads out over the hillsides in a haphazard fashion. A few of the roads are not passable; they are old and unpaved, and I wouldn’t recommend driving on them unless you have a Range Rover.
