Sylkvanus Dodge, 1801-1871, was the father of Grenville and Nathan Dodge Sr. He moved around quite a bit in Danvers, Massachusetts, trying to find a job that fit him.

The Council Bluffs Library has a photo of Sylvanus.   The Council Bluffs Non-Pareil also has a series on Grenville Dodge, where they have an article about Sylvanus' ploys to get his family to move from Omaha/Council Bluffs out to a farm in Elkhorn.  He had a claim out there, as did both of his sons. Today Elkhorn is part of Omaha, but in those days it was definitely a separate town which had a lot of space between Omaha and itself.
